Jumanji 3D 1995 — an entirely different cult classic from the modern installments in the franchise. While the video-game-take-me-away stylings of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle 2017 and Jumanji: The Next Level 2019 deliver heroes to a video game universe, the original has an inverse premise —wild nature and mystic perils literally shoot out of a board game into the realworld, upending a sleepy town into a mayhem zone. Robin Williams gives a poignant performance as Alan Parrish, who was trapped in Jumanji's jungles for 26 years, adding a surprising layer to the story. A gloriously mixed bag of family adventure, fantasy and lightly disturbing horror tropes (bats perching in people’s hair, carnivorous vines curling across an innocent living room), the film adroitly toes the line between genre movie and family entertainment. The 3D aspect accentuates scenes with giant spiders that look like they’re crawling from the screen (and the couch) and when the house gets “overgrown” with tropical plants. The perfect film for fans of 90s classics like Jurassic Park and Gremlins, when practical effects helped create movie magic like no other.
