JFC did such an amazing job on the flash that the depth he added enhanced the overall story. The 3d really made you feel like what it looks like from the perspective of the flash, and you could really see the techniques jfc used where he lightens the depth and gradually increases it as the flash is going faster and faster when running through the city. Everything was done very tastefully and im loving the new experimentations with depth. Jfc did it again.

WARNING: LONG REVIEW IN 3 PARTS
PART I

I was lucky enough to watch JFC's Flash 3D last night on a big screen with a LcoS 3D projector. Previously I saw the film in 2D on the largest IMAX screen in Spain. Flash seems created for 3D, it is a crime they didn't released it 3D.

While I think it is a fun movie I would recommend to anyone, even in 2D, I don't think it is as good (or as bad) as some people say. But I'd like to review the 3D conversion, spoiler-free based in what I can appreciate after being involved with 3D for more than 30 years (although as a hobbyist and amateur, not professionally).

Flash seems a different and much better movie now in JFC's 3D. From being a 2D movie I just had fun with but, "err"... it's become one on my favorite 3D superhero movies. I must admit I was hyped with JFC conversion but it exceeded my expectations. Actually, I think this is the best JFC 3D conversion up to date. At least it is one of his best.

One might think it is just a matter of how 3D naturally improves things: e.g. in 3D the feeling of speed is much better now. I remember my disappointment at he theater with the bad FX for the chronosphere but now 3D converted chronosphere is a feast for your eyes, it seems great for it's depth despite the bad FX, It's just.... wow!

But it is not just a question of 3D over 2D. JFC plays with 3D to print his artistic vision. It is not just "let's deepen this". As some directors (e.g, Nolan) play with dynamic aspect ratio (and the appropriate lenses) in a way most people don't perceive, and others play with color grading (e.g. green tones in The Matrix to differentiate real and rendered worlds), JFC plays with depth depending on each scene/shot and the interpretation he wants to convey. Does this alter the director's vision? well, in some way... 3D productions usually have a 3D director, as every movie has a director of photography in addition to the main director of the film. I wouldn't call this alteration, but polishing or complementation. This 3D director role is played by JFC and IMHO he does really well printing his own signature on his latests conversions. This is something you won't find in automatic conversions no matter how perfect they could get to be, and thinking of IA conversions doing this is by now, science-fiction.

Let me explain: JFC gives a different treatment to 3D in "real world" and the speedforce and even in bullet-time and speedforce-time. Some examples spoiler-free in part II of the review (next message).

  - In real world, real time, you will find realistic 3D. Those watched in a small screen or at a sub-optimum distance from a projected screen might sometimes be mild for some tastes. I watched it in an optimum setup and can assure from the very 1st shoot 3D is so realistic that it impressed me. But if your brain starts forgetting 3D (although feeling immersed) the movie also helps: now a car flies in the accident unleashing a deep 3D at slow motion, or batman's face gets a close-up, or just his motorbike appears close to the viewer, turns and runs through a deep street.
  
  - When the action dynamically changes from real-time to speedforce-time (you will find the most noticeable example at the last scene at the supermarket), speedforce-time appear deeper while real-time appears midler. That is analogous to the aforementioned color grading in Matrix.
  
  - In the initial "bullet time" there are some amazing shots, thought it can be appreciated that JFC wants to enhance some over others, the enhanced ones are really awesome. The simpler ones may respond to a balance between work-time and results or may be intentional to avoid your eyes strain in a 140 min length feature. Or it may be just that: enhancing some shots. I don't know.
  
  - Once Flash breaks the time barrier and references to real world disappear it is a 3D-Depth feast for the eyes... it seems a demo created to sell 3D TVs and projectors. Actually, the whole 3D conversion itself is a demo created to convert esceptics (like I was some months ago).
  
  JFC takes care of his baby in a way most watchers won't appreciate, but the fact that they won't notice it, is proof of success. Those treatments must feel subliminal. Last night I saw the movie with an elder relative of mine who is always very critical of everything. He was brief with his criticism: "it's good 3D. We have lots of 3D BD with worse 3D. And you say this has been made by only one guy? Really?"

    No, JFC's Flash is not a movie where you can forget you are watching 3D. It is a spectacular release. Is it technically perfect? No. You might find some minor glitches, like some broken windows ;-) The movie itself isn't either. Does it matter? absolutely not.
    
    JFC's made justice to Flash, this movie deserved to have been originally released this way. Now, egoistically I am happy the studio didn't, 3D would have likely been worse. I say egoistically because the only pity is the audience who will have the privilege of enjoying this release is still small. I feel there's something wrong here. I have a bittersweet feeling: if Warner had hired JFC, they would have released a wonderful 3D for peanuts. But those peanuts would have been a fortune for JFC. So please, spread the word, but don't spread copies of the movie, as JFC needs support to go on producing more like this.
    
    I still can't believe what JFC's has achieved even when I had seen other JFC's. Really.

JFC did such an incredible job on this, there is literally nothing better about any studio release. I remember watching this in the theater and again on Vudu and the whole time I was thinking, what is the studio thinking? This release screamed 3d, the fact it wasn't was a slap in the face. The fact it was done by only one person Legitimately blows my mind. If you only see one conversion I would HIGHLY recommend this one you will not be disappointed.
