Actor and director Fred Graham (Keel) and Cole Porter (Randall) are working together on a musical version of the comedy of the great bard, and both believe that the only woman capable of playing the obstinate Katerina can only be Lilly Vanessi (Grayson), Fred's ex-wife. Trouble begins when Lois Lane (Miller) announces that she will play Bianca, Katerina's younger sister. Fred, who plays the role of Petruchio, willingly agrees to prick his ex-wife more painfully. Lois' dance partner (Roll), meanwhile, turns out to be a gambler and signs debt obligations for several thousand dollars on behalf of Fred. On the day of the premiere, two gangsters (Winn and Whitmore) come to get a favor.
