Former General Francis Hammel seizes Alcatraz Island with a group of soldiers and threatens San Francisco with missiles carrying chemical weapons. The only person who has ever managed to escape from Alcatraz is British spy John Mason. The FBI pulls him out of prison to help the special forces infiltrate the facility.

Together with chemist Stanley Goodspeed, they head to the island, where everything quickly turns into a race against time. And here it’s fascinating to watch the duo of Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage: one is experienced, cynical, and constantly improvising; the other is a nervous scientist who is completely ill-suited for such adventures.

This is one of Michael Bay’s most iconic action films. Explosions, car chases, Alcatraz, chemical weapons, and Hans Zimmer’s score—it’s all as action-packed as it gets, yet the film doesn’t neglect its characters or humor.
