Two con artists meet at a luxurious French resort. Lawrence Jamison is an elegant professional who swindles wealthy women out of large sums of money. Freddie Benson is his complete opposite: a brazen, fussy, and far less sophisticated con artist. Both quickly realize that they can’t coexist at the same resort.

They make a bet: whoever is the first to swindle $50,000 out of a young American woman gets to stay; the other has to leave. But the victim turns out to be far from as easy a mark as they expected.The film’s main delight is the pairing of Michael Caine and Steve Martin. Caine plays a cool, aristocratic professional, while Martin is practically walking chaos. Their constant struggle for control over the situation provides most of the humor.
