The Searchers is considered one of the most influential westerns starring John Wayne. Because John Wayne took a variety of different directions in the western genre, from hard westerns to drama to comedy, and many excellent films were made in the process, I do not want to make a final judgment on this. So only the 3D remains to be evaluated. There are some stereoscopically shot westerns that work very well in 3D, but that is because of the stereo basis that makes this possible. The typical game of colors in Westerns and the lack of a stereo basis are a bit of a hindrance to converting a film that was originally produced in 2D. Balancing this is extremely difficult. In addition, there are many riding elements that are very difficult to implement well. If you look at it, The Searchers must have been a very big challenge. Simply moving a classic movie like this into the 3rd dimension would not do the work justice either. However, all hurdles were solved excellently. At no time does this version seem forced. Everything was staged very harmoniously. It was worked on very carefully in order to honor the work and not clumsily trash it. The enormous potential for depth that the wide scenes of westerns offer has been exploited to the greatest possible extent. When assessing even distant elements, one almost feels like a land surveyor has been consulted. The superficial elements are clearly separated and placed in precise relation. The typical colors of the old westerns was not ignored but integrated and so the 3D does not appear to have been cut out but actually appears to have been stereoscopically shot. Pop Outs are not the focus here but are subtle supporting actors who contribute very well to what is happening. Despite all the difficulties, The Serchers is a 3-dimensional masterpiece.
