The largest body of water in the Caucasus, Lake Sevan, is located in Armenia. Its area is 1,240 km² and its altitude reaches 1,900 meters above sea level. The lake is surrounded by picturesque mountain ranges. About 250 thousand years ago, the eruption of lava from the nearby volcanoes created a natural barrier, damming up the ancient river valley. In historical sources, the lake is often referred to as a sea, as its area once reached 1,360 km². Currently, 28 rivers flow into Lake Sevan, while only one - Hrazdan, a tributary of the Araks River, flows out. An underwater rampart divides the lake into two parts: Small Sevan in the west and Big Sevan in the east, connected by a strait more than 5 km wide. Despite its smaller size, Small Sevan has the largest volume of water, reaching depths of up to 80 meters, while the bottom of Big Sevan is flat and does not exceed 30 meters in depth.
