Milky Way above Sahara Desert VR 360
Mankind has been fascinated by the stars since ancient times. The beauty of distant star constellations inspired even the first artists, and many rock paintings of celestial bodies can be found. In the modern world, we have extensive knowledge of the stars and even send spaceships into deep space. However, advances in technology have led to new problems: observing the starry sky is becoming increasingly difficult. The main reason for this is light pollution caused by the constant illumination of cities and towns. Street lights, advertising and building lighting create a bright background that obscures the night sky. The light from these artificial sources penetrates even into the lower atmosphere. Many old observatories, such as the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London and the Pulkovo Observatory in St. Petersburg, are now surrounded by residential buildings and cannot fully function. For city dwellers looking at the night sky, only the brightest objects remain visible.
