Plosky Tolbachik Volcano Eruption, Kamchatka, Russia VR 360
The helicopter heading to the Tolbachik volcano is 500 kilometers from the settlement of Esso. These 500 kilometers are difficult roads - both asphalted and unpaved. Because of the strong jetlag and the huge time difference with Moscow, I vaguely remember this way. When we finally arrived at the hotel, we were unable to rest: the assembly and testing of the equipment took almost the whole night. In the morning, waking up after a short nap, we saw the team warming up the frozen Mi-8, a twin-turbine helicopter preparing for takeoff. It was -19°C outside. The flight from Esso to Tolbachik takes about 30 minutes. Soon we saw the front of the lava flow in the helicopter portholes. Smoke was rising, but there was no open fire - the forest remained untouched. We hovered in the air, opened the hatches and began filming. The volcano, hidden by clouds and smoke, looked mesmerizing. We decided to climb up the lava flow, and soon the first glowing lava flows appeared below us. Reducing the speed of the helicopter, we took some panoramic shots. We were amazed - we were finally seeing it!
