Nowadays, the water level is controlled automatically using modern technology and pumping stations, but before they existed, every village had a windmill. In those days, Holland was called “the land of 10,000 windmills”. Today there are about 1,000 left, which is still more than any other country. The windmills no longer function as originally intended, but their memory lives on. Every second Saturday in May, the Netherlands celebrates National Windmill Day. On this day, more than 600 windmills open their doors to visitors and millers show and tell about their craft. But we don't have to wait for this special day to learn more about a fascinating part of Dutch history: just open our video and take a tour.
