Kazan is one of the oldest cities in Russia and celebrated its millennium in 2005. The city rightly bears the title of “the third capital of Russia”, as its population exceeds one million people, and every year Kazan attracts the same number of tourists wishing to get acquainted with its cultural and historical monuments. For centuries Kazan has maintained its significant place in the life of the country. Founded in the early 10th century as a fortress of the Volga Bulgars, the city has a mysterious origin of its name. According to one of the most famous legends, the word “kazan” in Tatar translates as “kettle”.
